To me, Standard six embodies the meaning of becoming a true professional in early child care and education. Engaging with young children, their families, and colleagues exemplifies becoming a professional. In any arena, situation, or circumstance, I will conduct myself in a professional manner by upholding the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. Because I participate in an ongoing professional development that supports all children and their families, I see myself as an advocate for young children and their families.
For key element 6A I chose a reflective journal that I had to write in CHLD DV 120 Intro To Early Childhood Education Group Care, reflecting on an article previously chosen and describe how it relates to the child development field. I chose an article that talked about how the lack of “tummy time” with babies affected them developmentally later in life. In my reflection, I discussed the various developmental effects “tummy time” had on babies, how to prevent it, and how it related to the childcare providers. By doing this I Identified & involved myself with the early childhood field. In the future, I will continue to keep up with the current issues or trends and connect with how it may affect my work.
For key element 6A I chose the self care assessment I completed in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. To complete this I had to rate and reflect on myself an experiences. By doing this in my reflection I identified and involved myself with the early childhood field. In the future i will continue to reflect on my practices as a early childhood professional.
For key element 6B I chose a quiz administered in CHLD DV 258 Principles & Practices of Pre-School Education. On this quiz we had to construct a classroom environment applying our understanding of NAEYC standards and describe the reasons for our designs. While describing the setting, we had to give reasoning for the design and back up that reasoning which showed we knew about & upheld ethical standards and their early childhood professional guidelines. In the future, I would continue to use and uphold ethical standards in everything I did as a childcare provider, whether it’s designing an environment, creating a meal plan, taking anecdotal notes or even administering medications to a child.
For key element 6B I chose the quiz that we took in week 7 of CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. We had to plan a week of lesson plans and explain what and why we incorporated in to the curriculum. With each element we put into the lesson plan , we had to explain why we chose this activity and which developmental domain it covered, which showed that we knew and upheld ethical standards and their early childhood professional guidelines. In the future I will continue to use and uphold ethical standards in everything I do as a childcare provider.
For key element 6C I chose a professional developmental workshop I attended. In this workshop I was informed on the dangers of SIDS(sudden infant death syndrome) and how to prevent it. By signing up for this workshop I gained a knowledge that I didn't have before and related to my profession which demonstrates that I am engaging in continuous, collaborative, learning to inform practice. In the future, I will continue to seek ways to improve my own practices and indulge in purposeful learning that directly influences the quality of my work with young children.
For key element 6C I chose my experience in CHLD DV 259-1 Practicum In Pre-School itself. During this class I have been equipped with group management tools, taught what to look for when observing a child, how to help that child improve in skills they may lack and so much more. By enrolling in this class I have gained knowledge that I didn't have before and related to my profession which demonstrates that I am engaging in continuous, collaborative, learning to inform practice. In the future I will continue to learn and better myself through educational experiences.
For key element 6D I chose my teacher research project for CHLD DV 258 Principles & Practices of Pre-School Education. For this project I had to conduct research and reflect upon it. I had to consider the early childhood education setting and how it involved play. After I observed the children and educators, conducted interviews, took pictures, and lots of notes, I answered questions such as “when does play happen?” and “what does play look like in this setting?” Because I reflected on readings from the course-text, my observations and practices during my research, and philosophers such as Piaget, I have demonstrated that I am influenced by knowledgeable, reflective, and critical perspectives. In the future, I can utilize these skills when speaking with a parent, colleague, or director about organizing nap time, creating a newsletter, or resolving a dispute.
For key element 6D I chose my teacher research project in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. In completing this project I had to conduct research and display what i have learned. While writing the developmental statement and parent letter I reflected back on my observations. By reflecting on my observations and practices during research I have demonstrated that I am influenced by knowledgeable, reflective, and critical perspective. In the future I can utilize these skills when speaking with a parent, colleague, or director about organizing nap time, creating a newsletter, or resolving a dispute.
For key element 6E I chose an elevator speech for CHLD DV 258 Principles & Practices of Pre-School Education. This was a question we had to answer on a quiz on what would you say to President Obama about why he should support more play in the early childhood education field. By putting together this speech which voiced my views and beliefs pertaining to play and its benefits to young children, I demonstrated that I am engaged in informed advocacy for children and families in the profession. In the future, I can use this by staying aware of and engaged in examining ethical issues and societal concerns to help improve my community.
For key element 6E I chose the extra credit assignment that we had to complete in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. In this assignment we had to use a section of the child skills checklist to construct a learning prescription for that child. By putting together this learning prescription I took into consideration the child's skills and areas of improvement, used my beliefs and views to benefit that child which demonstrates that I am engaged in informed advocacy for children and families in the profession. In the future I can use this by staying aware of and engaged in examining ethical issues and societal concerns to help improve my classroom and community.
