To me, the definition of Standard two is communicating with and involving the children’s families and communities in a developmentally appropriate manner. Understanding the diversity of families and communities, and engaging families in curriculum planning embody building positive relationships with families and communities. I understand that possessing this knowledge is critical in my ability to help children learn and develop well.
For key element 2A I chose an interview I took in CHLD DV 262-1 Child, Family & Community Relations on people from different origins and their family life. In order to develop this I had to interview someone of Jamaican decent and ask several questions regarding their family background. This shows that I know about and understand divers family and community characteristics because the questions I asked gave me insight on how diverse families and communities are and how even though they are diverse we all have many commonalities. I can use this knowledge when planning family nights at my daycare and also keeping in mind ways I can help children learn and develop regardless of their culture, ethnicity, language, or special needs.
For key element 2A I chose my teacher research project in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. In completing this project i had to conduct research and display what i have learned. In writing the developmental statement, parent letter, and conducting a teacher interview i had to take into consideration the many characteristics of family make up and what role it plays in a child's life. This shows that I know about and understand diverse family and community characteristics because the questions I asked gave me insight on how diverse families and communities are. I can use this knowledge when planning family nights at my daycare and also keeping in mind ways I can help children learn and develop regardless of their culture, ethnicity, language, or special needs.
For key element 2B I chose a Parent Resource Board and I constructed in CHLD DV 262-1 Child, Family & Community Relations. I had to get different community resources, construct a newsletter, and incorporate meal plans, events, schedules and classroom activities in order to complete this project. Parents could see what resources are available to them in their community and we can converse about them. When I completed this I learned how to support and engage families & communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships. In the future, I can use this in my daycare to inform my parents of the support and help they have in their community.
For key element 2B I chose a Parent Letter I constructed in CHLD DV 259-1 Practicum In Pre-School. During the student-teacher practicum we had to write a letter to the parents discussing our involvement in the classroom. Within the monthly newsletter parents will receive this letter and be able to see what strengths their child has and which areas need improvement. With completing this parent letter I will learn how to support and engage families & communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships. In the future I can use this in my daycare to inform my parents of the progress their child has made and how they can continue to help them develop.
For key element 2C I chose a Parent Resource Board and I constructed in CHLD DV 262-1 Child, Family & Community Relations. I had to get different community resources, construct a newsletter, and incorporate meal plans, events, schedules and classroom activities in order to complete this project. Parents could see their child's progression in class and what their strengths and working points are. We could discuss this further and at that time I could ask for their input on their child’s development. Because I constructed this parent board I learned how to involve families & communities in young children's development & learning. Communicating with parents in a meaningful way is a personal and professional goal as I continue in my practice.
