From my mentor teacher, many of my own teachers and the theories I have studied, I have developed my philosophy. I believe that play is powerful and from the years of ages 2 to 6 are the play years. Of course people of all ages play, but this is the prime time. As an early childhood educator I am dedicated to nourishing each child’s mind and creativity. By providing a carefully planned environment that is both stimulating and exciting, children will be able to learn without knowing learning is taking place.
I believe that every opportunity is a teaching opportunity but that doesn't mean you have sit down with a book or pencil and paper. In order to implement my beliefs into a great environment I would choose a play based curriculum. A play-based curriculum is developmentally appropriate for all children; It has teachers who engage in conversation with them, who extend their play when required, and who support children as they explore their environment. I will ensure that each child’s special needs are met with a curriculum that will meet them where they are, instead of requiring them to fit within the lines of a worksheet.
Children minds seem playful when they explain that “the sun shines bright so we can go out and play.” I use to cringe at the idea of my son filling the toilet with wads of toilet tissue until there wasn't any left on the roll. I got upset because I just looked at it as he was wasting my money and I was the one elbow deep in a toilet bowl. But I had to realize he may think its cool the way the tissue transforms when it touches the water and how no matter how many times you throw the tissue in there it keeps disappearing! Thats pretty cool when you think of it that way and it made me realize he wasn't just possibly causing a very high plumbing bill he was learning physical science and developing his sensory skills.
As adults we often forget how fun it is to play and just have a great time. We get wrapped up in the outcome or time constraints. I am committed to respect and engage families & communities through supportive and reciprocal relationships. I believe parents should be very involved in their child's educational experiences. I plan to always incorporate family nights and take-home activities in my curriculum.
