To me Standard one is the heart of the standards because it focuses directly on children’s needs and characteristics. As an early childhood educator, I can properly nurture and educate children by obtaining knowledge of the influences on development. By continually educating myself about their developmental needs and influences on development and learning, I can provide them with healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments.
For key element 1A I chose a reflective journal that I wrote after reading chapters in my CHLD DV 107 Health Safety And Nutrition course book and my own knowledge. To develop it, I had to attend weeks in class, take notes, and read the book given for the course. My reflective journal speaks about the nutritional needs of children and also their eating habits. By discussing them both I showed that I do know and understand young children’s characteristics and needs. I can use this in the future when I plan meals for the children and also within my personal life when my child does not want to eat or is very picky.
For key element 1A I chose a brochure we had to create in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families about the social and emotional development of young children. To develop it I had to attend weeks in class, take notes, and read the book given for the course. My brochure displays the needs of children and also their behaviors. By discussing them both I showed that I do know and understand young children’s characteristics and needs. I can use this in the future when I talk with families to encourage "family time" and also when interacting with children in my daycare by knowing how to stimulate and develop their social and emotional skills.
For key element 1B I chose a quiz taken in CHLD DV 258 Principles & Practices of Pre-School Education. On this quiz we had to answer a question about what the benefits were to children who played outdoors on a daily basis. By answering this question I had to know and understand how something as simple as letting student enjoy outdoor activities could enhance their physical, social, and cognitive development skills which demonstrates that I do know and understand the multiple influences on development and learning. In the future, I can utilize this information when creating lesson plans.

In the future, I can utilize this information when speaking with parents about helping their child to develop.
For key element 1C I chose the second quiz that we took in CHLD DV 258 Principles & Practices of Pre-School Education. We had to draw out an environment for 3-5 year olds and explain what and why we incorporated in to the environment. We learned the benefits to the child with each element we put into the classroom. By creating this environment it shows that I am using developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments. In the future, I could use this knowledge in designing an early childhood environment.
For key element 1C I chose the quiz that we took in week 7 in my CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families course. We had to plan a week of lesson plans and explain the relationship to the curriculum. We learned the benefits to the child with each element we put into the classroom. By creating these lesson plans it shows that I am using developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments. In the future, I could use this knowledge in designing an appropriate lesson plan to enrich my curriculum.
