To me, Standard three means knowing the central goals, benefits, and uses of assessment and applying them in developmentally appropriate ways. I understand that I should always practice responsible assessment and a variety of formative, qualitative and standardized, assessment tools and strategies. I will continue to interpret assessment results, with the goal of obtaining valid, useful information to inform practice and decision making.
For key element 3A I chose an inquiry lesson plan assigned as a group project in CHLD DV 143 Science & Math for Young Children. During this process we were assigned literature books to construct a lesson plan on, and we came up with activities, strategies, and objectives for the children to learn about the life of a leaf. This artifact demonstrates that I understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment because while constructing this lesson plan we had to come up with ways to assess what the children knew, what they needed to know, and how they could learn. In the future, I could use this to meet the special needs of children and show effectiveness of teaching.
For key element 3A I chose a quiz we completed in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. During this quiz we had to answer questions like How can observation be used as an assessment tool and what type of assessments are required. This artifact demonstrates that I understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment because while answering the questions I had to come up with ways to assess what the children knew, what they needed to know, and how they could learn. In the future I could use this to meet the special needs of children and show effectiveness of teaching.
For key element 3B I chose a CHLD DV 143 Science & Math for Young Children inquiry lesson plan, was created in a group project, and we were assigned literature books to construct a lesson plan on. During this process we came up with activities, strategies, and objectives for the children to learn about the life of a leaf. This artifact demonstrates that I know about and use observation, documentation, and other appropriate assessment tools and approaches because while constructing this lesson plan we chose to have open discussions, create a graph, and record a classroom nature walk. By doing all of these things we documented the children's development and found out what we needed to work on, make good future decisions for curriculum, and see if and how much the children were interested in the activities and course work. I could use this in the future when I wanted to show the parents the interests and progression of their child and also to make decisions on curriculum that will encourage proper development.

During this quiz we had to answer questions like How can observation be used as an assessment tool and what type of assessments are required. This artifact demonstrates that I know about and use observation, documentation, and other appropriate assessment tools and approaches because while answering the questions I chose to have open discussions, take photos, and record a classroom activity. I could use this in the future when I wanted to show the parents the interests and progression of their child and also to make decisions on curriculum that will encourage proper development.
For key element 3C I chose a CHLD DV 107 Health Safety and Nutrition lesson plan that we had to construct to teach children about medications. During this process we created a lesson plan that allowed ways that children could easily recognize medicine from candy, why we use medicine, and that only adults should administer medicine. This artifact shows that I understand and practice responsible assessment to promote positive outcomes for each child because during the lesson plan we displayed candy and medicine so the children could see the differences and documented this. By doing this we promoted health and anti-drug abuse. At the end of the activity we had an open discussion which allowed us to further document the outcomes. I can use this in the future when trying to figure out how I can help children develop and respond to obstacles and opportunities in their life.
For key element 3C I chose a quiz we completed in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. During this quiz we had to answer questions like How can observation be used as an assessment tool and what type of assessments are required. This artifact shows that I understand and practice responsible assessment to promote positive outcomes for each child because during the quiz I answered the question of What are the three main points when observing and assessing a child. By doing this I showed that to complete an assessment responsibly I must enter with a clear and unbiased mind. I can use this in the future when observing children and trying to come up with positive outcomes for each child.
For key element 3D I chose a CHLD DV 107 Health Safety and Nutrition lesson plan that we had to construct to teach children about medications. During this process we created a lesson plan that allowed ways that children could easily recognize medicine from candy, why we use medicine, and that only adults should administer medicine. This artifact shows that I know about assessment partnerships with families and with professional colleagues because after presenting the lesson plan to our professor and class we were able to have questions and a discussion session giving tips and feedback on how to improve and what really was effective in our lesson plan. I could use this in the future when I need to show my administrator or director the class progression, or for back up to show what is needed in the classroom to help the children's development.
For key element 3D I chose a quiz we completed in CHLD DV 201 Observation, Assessment, & Documentation to Support Young Children & Families. During this quiz we had to answer questions like what is the purpose of assessment and how does evidence play a role in assessment. This artifact shows that I know about assessment partnerships with families and with professional colleagues because after taking evidence of the assessment we could then discuss it with the parents and show how we came to the assessment findings. I could use this in the future when I need to show my administrator or director the class progression, or for a parent teacher conference to show what is needed to help the children's development.
