To me, Standard five consists of obtaining and applying the proper knowledge so that I am able to expand the minds of children. By understanding the content knowledge and resources in academic disciplines I am able provide children with a rich educational experience. I can use my own knowledge, appropriate early learning standards, and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curricula for each child.
For key element 5A I chose a field trip lesson plan paper I constructed in CHLD DV 143 Science & Math
for Young Children. In this paper I had to describe a field trip, identifying the math/science goals I
wanted to achieve, and develop a list of extending books/activities that relate to the trip. In each activity
I chose I had to create it based upon the learning objective or goal, and know what was important to
learn from that experience and why it was important which demonstrates that I understand content
knowledge and resources in academic disciplines. In the future, I will use this to construct an effective
curriculum in my daycare that will allow the children to carry on their development later in life.
For key element 5B I chose a children's book analysis I constructed in CHLD DV 109 Language & Literacy Development in Early Childhood. In this paper I had to analyze a children's book and discuss topics about the book such as: story line, illustrations, theme, and concept. In order for me to properly analyze the characteristics of the book I had to do research first and apply it according to the core concepts I had previously learned which demonstrates that I know and use the central concepts, inquiry tools, and structures of content areas or academic disciplines. In the future, I can use this in creating an appropriate learning environment for all of my children in each content area.
For key element 5C I chose a language stimulation plan paper I constructed in CHLD DV 109 Language & Literacy Development in Early Childhood. In this paper I had to describe a lesson plan, identifying the language goals I wanted to achieve, and develop a list of extending books/activities that relate to the lesson. The target
age was 3-5yrs old, so I had to make sure the activities captured everyone’s attention, could be applied to an early learning standard and wasn't too challenging at the same time. Going through that process demonstrates that I can use my own knowledge, appropriate early learning standards, and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curricula for each child. In the future, I can use this to prepare activities that will capture the child's attention no matter what age or development level.
